ROYAL OPERA HOUSE vs. ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL

Theatres are venues for live performance. They are places where people gather, interact and experience. These buildings are City landmarks, reference destinations for tourists and locals that become social catalysers.

The Royal Opera House and The Royal Festival Hall, two iconic venues in London that represent important cultural landmarks, were chosen for this exercise.

Through drawing, students explored how differently these buildings engage with their adjacent city context; how people move, interact and behave in them; how the spatial conditions influence the experience and the perception inside and outside the buildings. The topics of research included:

1- Infrastructure & Network
2- Circulation & Flow
3- Activity & Time
4- Pattern (vertical & horizontal)
5- Scale (vertically & horizontally)
