Liverpool.IndustrialEdge.

Autumn.2016

The autumn semester 2016 studio worked around the theme of urban regeneration in the context of a powerful industrial city; Liverpool. In a challenge to redefine its urban profile, new architecture coexist with the old industrial fabric and new programmatic relationships are tested. The transformation into a competitive city destination is a challenge that students took on board to conclude with specific architectural responses. Focus was given in studying the interface between the water edge and the city; between industrial zones and new urbanities.

The exercise started with a group work to record and map the existing conditions of the selected part of the city. Tangible and intangible qualities such as infrastructure and flow, activity and time, verticality and pattern, etc, inspired individual strategies. The challenge to formulate ambitious proposals have been tested through multiple representation techniques and models that revealed, tested and proposed ideas in a precise context.

The concept of Iconic Architecture was questioned in its aesthetic, programmatic and socio-economic capacities. Students were invited to explore their own aesthetic style as an outcome of the progress from site analysis into propositional studies, adn the dialogue between 2d and 3d representation revealed unpredicted qualities that inspired the students’ design narrative.
